First Position and the Syntax/Prosody Interface: Old Irish Preverbs

چکیده

In recent work a tentative suggestion has emerged: certain processes which appear to be core cases of head movement should be analysed instead as not involving the computational system at all, but rather as arising because of the way that the phonological systems interact with the structures delivered to the interface by the syntax (see, for example, Chomsky 1995, 4.7.3). In this paper, I examine a case of verb placement which suggests very strongly that at least some aspects of this proposal are on the right track, because the phenomenon in question eludes purely syntactic analysis without incurring unacceptable theoretical costs. I show that if proper attention is paid to the way that the syntactic representations delivered by the computational system interface with the system that is responsible for imposing prosodic structure, the analysis of this particular case of verb placement is much simplified. The phenomenon in question is the position of the verb and various preverbal particles in Old Irish (OI). The data are from the Eighth and Ninth centuries, mainly from explanatory glosses and comentaries on Latin texts. I am not aiming to place this discussion in a diachronic context. My aim is rather to show that we can place the surface positions of the various elements of the Old Irish verbal complex with some accuracy, but doing so brings up the question of how these elements got to these positions. Syntactic solutions to this question turn out to be not wholely satisfactory.

Second Position and the Prosody-syntax Interface

Bögel et al. (2009) outlined a new architecture for modeling the interaction between prosody and syntax: we proposed an arrangement of interacting components in which prosodic information is developed in a module that operates independently of the syntax while still allowing for syntactic rules and preferences to be conditioned on prosodic boundaries and other features. This architecture allows...

Investigating interfaces: an experimental approach to focus in Sicilian Italian

This paper describes an investigation of the syntax-prosody interface in the expression of focus in Sicilian Italian. It finds evidence of a generalised reversal of the articulation of information structure, with new information often preceding old, and of intonational differentiation between focus types. Introduction A pressing question in current linguistic theory is how different components ...

Cross-linguistic Influence at Syntax-pragmatics Interface: A Case of OPC in Persian

Recent research in the area of Second Language Acquisition has proposed that bilinguals and L2 learners show syntactic indeterminacy when syntactic properties interface with other cognitive domains. Most of the research in this area has focused on the pragmatic use of syntactic properties while the investigation of compliance with a grammatical rule at syntax-related interfaces has not received...

Aligning prosody and syntax in property grammars

We propose in this paper a new approach for representing the prosody/syntax interface. We use for this a particular formalism, called Property Grammars, in which all information is represented by means of constraints. We show how alignment constraints can implement such an interface. One of the interests of these constraints, in comparison with other approaches such as optimality theory, is the...

Prosody, Focus and Ellipsis in Irish

When we study how phonological representations align with syntactic and semantic representations, we principally study imperfect parallelism.1 Prosodic representations must be to some degree faithful to the syntactic and semantic representations they express (otherwise, prosodic cues would not be as useful as they in fact are in syntactic and semantic processing, Wagner & Watson (2010)). But th...
